A half day

The half-day itinerary of the St Antoine walk, by bike

St Antoine is located just after the lively and dynamic village of Goodlands in the north-east of the island. Away from Grand Bay, this region has remained authentic.

We start our journey from the Domaine de Saint Antoine nearby a former sugar factory, direction Madame Azor village, and after a few pedal strokes we reach the pretty wild coast where riding at the edge of the beach is a real pleasure for young and old alike.

Away from the classic tourist circuits, you will discover Melville and its calm beaches, a real immersion in the Mauritian authenticity. Nature lovers will be delighted by the panoramic view of the northern islands and the emerald colour of the Indian Ocean.

The green colour of the sugar cane fields that border the road offers an interesting contrast. In summer the silvery crests of the canes, which offer a unique panorama, are a sign that the harvest will start soon.

The crossing of Grand Gaube, a typical fishing village, offers an interesting discovery of the life of Mauritians attached to their traditions.

At the edge of the beach, an Indian temple will surprise you. You will then proceed along a dirt road that will lead you to basalt stone ruins for a brief stop.

We will open the doors of a barachois to enable you to visit an oyster farm usually closed to the public. Children will have the opportunity to learn more about sea turtles and oyster farming. Your guide will also give explanations regarding the extinct giant tortoises endemic to Mauritius and the very important role which they played in the ecosystem of Mauritius. He will also explain how to recognize male and female turtles, comment on their diet and their life expectancy. Children will also be able to feed the tortoises and the barracudas in the basin.

We’ll get back on track for a short ride to Sylvie’s house in Grand Gaube where we shall receive a warm welcome and enjoy a cup of tea and Mauritian cakes. This moment of sharing and exchange will remain etched in your memories.

On our way back we shall make a stop to admire a historical heritage, the St Antoine Mansion, remnant of the family of the famous Mauritian painter, De Chazal. Now transformed into a guest room and table d’hôte, this sumptuous colonial house offers a delicious table for those who want to taste a local cuisine. You can of course take advantage of this on reservation and at an additional cost.

This electric mountain bike ride does not require any particular physical effort; the electric assistance allows you to enjoy the beauty of the landscapes at your own pace.
